Memories of Stanmore - Matthew Waldin

My name is Matthew Waldin (1967), son of David John Waldin (and Merle, neé Cook) who taught at Stanmore (I was at Stanmore School from 1975-1977 and was born at 38 Stanmore Lane no less).

My elder sister Patience (1965) also went to Stanmore. In the photo [of Nigel Sacree’s memories] person No. 42 could not have been my father as he was in Africa fighting Rommel (Dad was born 22 April 1922). He was one of four kids. His elder brother Peter was in Canada. The person in the photo–if a Waldin–could have been my dad's sister Jean or more probably as 42 is a boy it was the youngest sibling, Howard Waldin (who lived in Twyford and became an architect). Hope this helps.

Matthew (Monty) Waldin

The Class of 57 – Stanmore Primary School – final Primary year – Miss Glover’s class

The Class of 57 – Stanmore Primary School – final Primary year – Miss Glover’s class

I have been looking through the memorabilia of Miss Glover on the school website. The class photograph is of her 1956/7 class, with me included in my final year at Stanmore Primary.

The photograph is one of two (or more) made available for purchase that year, and I have attached the version that I have, with names added E&OE.  This class was probably one of her all-time largest classes; one of two baby boomer classes for that year.  There appears to be no space for her to be seated amongst her forty three pupils.  If I remember correctly she managed the class, single-handedly; I have no memory of help being provided by parents or classroom assistants, in those days.

Like Nigel Sacree in his account elsewhere, I vividly remember Miss Glover’s serialisation of Moonfleet on Friday afternoons.

Miss Glover had spent her childhood in Weymouth, the town at the end of the railway line which passes the school.   The Moonfleet author J Meade Falkner also schooled in Weymouth, a few generations earlier, and the setting for his book was based on Fleet church, just a Sunday’s walk away from Miss Glover’s childhood home in Weymouth.

In 1911, Frances Annie GLOVER, was aged 6 years and her father was working at the torpedo factory in the Royal Navy’s Portland harbour.  This association is likely to have provided the background for her essay on the Royal Navy in the Great War.

Thanks for the website; it brought back many happy memories of my school days and childhood.

Memories of Stanmore - Neil Fisher

Here is a photo of my own that I found from my days in Stanmore Infants. I think this would have been in 1966. The concrete horse was in the infants playground then.

The names that I can remember are as follows: Back left to right; unknown, Greg Smith (I think), John Ashurst (his father Jake Ashurst was the Headmaster of Peter Symonds Grammar School in those days - a character, who also taught me Latin for two years), Wayne Curzon, Jeremy Vale, Brian Bowers. Front row left to right; Diane Gibson, Louise Tatton (I think), Julie Colenutt, Neil Fisher, Alison Merwood.

I can remember a few teachers; I think I started in Mrs Cavell's class and was also in Miss Swift and Miss Percival's class too in the infants. In the Juniors, I was in Mrs Blake's class, Mrs EG Green and Miss J Green and then Mr Hartnell. I can also remember Mrs Brown too as she taught us some very basic French before we left for secondary school. I can also remember being in the school play too, which was called The Pig in the Palace. I played the King.
