Phyiscal Education
Intent
Appreciate, Participate, Innovate
At Stanmore Primary School, we recognise that a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in physically demanding activities. Children participate in a broad range of activities throughout curriculum PE time, including gymnastics, dance, games, outdoor education, athletics, and swimming. We create engaging learning journeys that encourage children to appreciate how to stay fit, healthy, and active, whilst providing opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Our children learn how to revise and refine fundamental movement skills such as rolling and jumping. Develop overall agility, balance, coordination and strength and work as part of a team towards a common goal to innovate performance. Culminating in opportunities to participate in sport at break times and compete in a range of extra-curricular sporting activities, to build character and help to embed values such as fairness, respect, sportsmanship, and good character.

Implementation
The Stanmore Approach
At Stanmore Primary School, our children access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance, and coordination, individually and with others, which support their health and fitness. During their primary school education at Stanmore, the children are encouraged to engage in competitive (against both self and others) activities. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. At Stanmore Primary School, we appreciate our local area and community and incorporate local sporting events into the school sporting calendar, to provide children with extra-curricular opportunities outside of their everyday norms. We regularly use Active Me 360 to strengthen subject expertise, for example in cricket. We work with our partners, Kings School and Penguins Swimming Club to deliver an effective swimming curriculum. We recognise that it is important for children in our Stanmore community to move more. We know that that movement and exercise can protect and build mental wellbeing, boost mood, and help us look after our children’s health. Our approach includes outdoor learning in our extensive grounds and during our residential visits to Minstead and Stubbington. We offer bike ability in Year R and Year 5. We encourage children to attend: https://www.parkrun.org.uk/winchester-juniors/ it’s free, inclusive and fun.
BEST Values and Keys for Success
Physical education naturally encourages resilience, persistence and co-operation as they belong to a team. The children have the opportunity to be creative and reflective throughout the different team and individual sporting activities. They are expected to show respect for the equipment that they use and responsibility for the roles within their groups to ensure everyone learns effectively and has a sense of support in their groups. Through the use of oracy skills children are encouraged to share their independent thoughts, linked to their knowledge respectfully. When delivering group performance, the children need to use their skills of organisation. Children need to have the confidence and trust in their ideas in order to see a group performance through, to know that they have considered the elements necessary for it to work and achieve excellence.
Inclusion
We are committed to inclusion and every child is entitled to a physical education curriculum that may be adapted to their individual needs. Suitable learning challenges appropriate to the diverse needs of all children ensure progression. To overcome learning barriers a range of learning styles are used e.g., adapted equipment or displays to support understanding of challenging concepts and a plethora of practical opportunities to reinforce knowledge. Therefore, all children will be confidently accessing the physical education curriculum at their level.
SMSC and British Values
Physical education at Stanmore Primary School supports the development of the whole-child. The benefits of Physical Education include empathy, teamwork, community, and improved mental health. We want children to develop agency and control over their physical health. A key aspect of Physical Education is the development of physical health, as increasing activity and health in children is of high importance in the UK, by showing children a variety of both team and individual sports, the likelihood of them being able to find a sustainably active lifestyle increases, to aid this we also devote time to discuss and teach healthy diets and mental health. Team activity and light competition enable the children to empathise and collaborate on common goals, as well as show resilience and perseverance.
Oracy
We encourage children to ask questions and discuss their learning in oracy based sessions, using ‘agree, build challenge’ (ABC) to enable the teacher to build on and extend children’s scientific thinking. We welcome children sharing their ideas with peers and support their understanding of new vocabulary.
Impact
How is this subject assessed
By the end of each key stage, pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the content, skills and processes specified in the relevant programme of study of the National Curriculum. Teachers keep track of any children who are not meeting the year group expectations.
The positive impact of movement can be seen in PE lessons, sport led by Activeme 360, swimming, bikeability and outdoor learning through Forest School. These activities are completely inclusive, leaving everyone feeling good about themselves. More information can be read in our PE and Sports Premium Document.
Assessment of PE is reported to parents in the annual report.
